Bonnie's Berries Sign
Get ready for a short road trip!  The June 30 7:00 p.m. meeting of the Garden Club will consist of a field trip to the pick-your-own blueberry farm of Randy Owens.  The farm, Bonnie’s Berries, is located at 18101 Central Ave. (Rte 214), 1.6 miles east of Rte. 301. If the weather cooperates, we should have some fresh blueberries to pick and hear how to grow our own!  Come join us for what should be a delightful and informative tour of the blueberry farm.  As Randy explains, they planted 440 2-year old plants of eleven different cultivars back in April, 2008 to supplement the eleven 25-year old plants they had. Many of their friends and family members wanted berries, and they thought  it would be a great way to get into small-scale farming and supplement their income.  Randy’s property was part of his grandfather’s (Walter T. Nicholson) farm. Their pick-your-own blueberry operation covers about 1/4 acre.  Last year they sold 1,600 pounds of blueberries and this year looks even better.  This year, the farm officially opened on June 13 and the picking season runs through July, if drought and the birds don’t end it sooner.  For the tour, wear what is comfortable. The grass is mowed around the bushes.  To get to the farm, drive 1.6 miles east of Rte. 301 on Central Ave.  The farm is on the south side of the road.  The mailbox has the house number on it and a sign hanging over it, shaped like a sewing machine.  Go up the driveway and turn left toward the barn. Park on the left, on the grass.

NOTE: If inclement weather occurs by 6:00 p.m. event will be postponed.
