Bio

Mike Gordon is Merchandise Manager of Patuxent Nursery in Bowie where he has worked for the past several years.

Gardening has been a life-long hobby for Mike.  His love for gardening stems from childhood -- his parents and grandparents understood the benefits of managing their own garden and enjoying the fruits of their labors.

Mike’s current interests include organic gardening and creating a more sustainable environment at home, including producing his own food -- starting his own seed from his favorite varieties in late winter, and canning and preserving vegetables.  He further supports a ‘green’ environment at home by using renewable resources, in his wood-burning stove, to heat his home.  To promote a longer growing season, Mike uses a heated greenhouse, with heat provided by this same wood stove.   Additionally, rain barrels store as much as 600 gallons of rainwater, which he uses in his many gardens, as needed.

The BCGC Annual Picnic

posted Aug 15, 2011 6:45 AM by Maxx McIlhargey   [ updated Oct 9, 2011 8:31 AM ]

The 2011 BCGC picnic will be held in the beautiful garden of Faith and Jerry Bange on Sunday, June 5, starting around 12:00 Noon.  If you haven't visited during one of their spectacular open gardens, now's your chance. They live at 3508 Foxhall Drive in Davidsonville, right off Rt. 214 - Central Avenue, directly across from Davidsonville Elementary School. There's plenty of parking  along Foxhall Dr.  *Important - please bring your own chairs*.

In a change from previous picnics, we ask that if your last name begins with  A-M, you bring a main dish or salad. If your name starts with N-Z, please bring a side dish or dessert. However, if there is a special dish you like to make and wish to bring then that fine as well.  Faith is making her famous meatballs, yum. The club will supply water, drinks and fried chicken.  Please R.S.V.P. by email to geraldbange@aol.com , or phone Faith at 410-798-9207 with a headcount so we can predict quantities. You can also sign up at Tuesday's meeting. Thanks

A note from Faith:  If anyone has any extra time to help get the garden ready for the picnic then please let me know.  Because of the recent rain we've been having the weeds are running rampant.  I think I've taken about 15 large bags of weeds out of the garden already and there are still more coming.  I will be glad to REWARD your help with FREE daylilies (or other plants you might select).  Come to the Open Garden on Saturday, June 25 from 7:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. and make a list.  We are looking forward to making this year's picnic a wonderful event and memory.  Best wishes to all, Faith & Jerry
